Guy Sebastian Promo Tour 2004: Part 1
Guess what! Everyone's favourite Malaysian-born Australian is back!
And he's on another promo tour of KL.
Wait a minute, I remember him. You should. He's the very first
Australian Idol. Born in Klang, he began singing at a very early
age. At the age of 6, his family migrated to Australia. To cut a
long story short, he entered, he competed, and he won! He came to
Malaysia before to promote his debut album, but he's back again with
fresh new songs and an ever fresher and larger 'fro!
Here's what the big guy had to say when Xfresh caught up with him:
Music
So what music are you currently listening to?
Well, not all hits. I like Outkast and old stuff like Stevie Wonder;
Prince; Michael Jackson and Earth, Wind and Fire.
Do you prefer performing indoors or outdoors?
Well, it depends. Indoors when it's raining of course [laughs], but
back home, I performed outdoors in front of 40,000 people. The
performance was like a parade; it was like a homecoming for me.
What can we expect from your new album?
I had more time to write and arrange than the first album. There is
a ballad written by one of my idols, Brian McKnight. And there are a
few dance tracks, kinda like 70s funky music, with elements of disco
which makes it fresh. There are a lot of horns and strings
accompanying.
What appeal do you think your album has to Malaysian youth?
That's for the Malaysian youth to answer. If people want to listen
to your music, they do. People listen to music because it grabs
something in you.
What differences are there between this showcase and the last one?
I'm singing different songs, and it's quite a strange situation
because everywhere else I'm promoting my second album, but back here
in Asia, I'm still on my first one. It's still reasonably fresh
here.
What kind of music touches you?
Ballads, like all Asians. [laughs] Erm, James Ingram, boy band
ballads. Songs with beautiful lyrics like Climb Every Mountain,
which is on the album, songs that really inspire people.
What's the best part of being in this industry?
Recording. Live performances. Performances because it's my way of
saying thank you to the fans.
Idol Experiences
Are there any memorable critiques?
For Australian idol, the day of the audition, I just put on anything
and went for it. I walked in very nervous. I think I was trembling.
And I remember, Ian, the mean judge, the Simon of Australia,
saying, "You're the best voice we've heard, but you look like crap."
[laughs] So after that, I paid a bit more attention to what I wore
and not just slap on anything.
How was it like performing in American Idol?
It was nerve-wracking. In America, you don't only represent yourself
as an artiste, but you represent your country as well.
What about World Idol?
It was cool! Yeah. I was fresh out from winning Australian Idol and
the competition was over Christmas and New Years and I had to spend
it in freezing cold London. But it was cool!
What do you think is a major characteristic of a star? The X-Factor.
Well, it's different in everyone. Everyone has a different x-factor.
Brad Pitt's X-Factor is different from Russell Crowe's
So what's yours?
I think mine is my honesty in my music. It's so much fun, and it's
so important to have fun and I get do what I want to do.
What advice do you have for Malaysian Idol hopefuls?
Three things: firstly, remain yourself. Secondly, always be about
the music. It's all about talent, not about looks. And always remain
humble, because the people will love you now and they will use you
for who you are now.
Do you think the idol trend will end?
All trends end eventually.
When?
Well American Idol is into its third season and it's the most
popular so far, even more popular than the first one. And back home,
they've started Idol 2, so it's hard to tell.
Fashion
What do you think about the current "bling-bling" trend? What's your
trend?
I don't really have a trend. I just bring myself. Lots of people
have tried to dress me but in the end I just be myself. I'm not
the "bling-bling" guy; I'm not the attitude guy.
What's with your hair?
Oh, my hair? [laughs] It just became my thing. It started out as
laziness and well; you see what's happened. [grins] My mum was
like "Cut it! You look like a street kid!" but now it's known
as "the 'fro". Everywhere I go I get asked about it.
Malaysia
What do you know about Malaysia since you've been away so long?
I don't really know much about Malaysia. I spent my first 6 years
here so I grew up here. You know, you can take the Malaysian out of
Malaysia, but you can't take the Malaysia out of you.
Is there any special place you would like to go in Malaysia?
I would love to go back to Klang where I was born, but when I'm not
so rushed. I'd like to wait till I have more time.
What do you remember about living in Malaysia?
Oh, in kindergarten I had a crush on a girl. My next-door neighbour
[thinks], Alvin, used to play Michael Jackson tracks all day! All
the time we would hear Beat It and Thriller from next door. Going
out with my cousins - we used to go to a water park with slides!
Personal
Do you really "Walk On The Wild Side"?
[laughs] Not really. It was just a t-shirt I wore. Most people would
see being wild as being crazy, or partying till really late. I do
party sometimes but to me, being wild is taking risks.
What made you decide to choose music as a career?
When I was small, about three years old, I used to sit by the radio
and record all my favourite songs so that was what probably got me
started.
Another Idol competitor, Tamara Grey, has turned to acting. Do you
have any plans to make films?
I have been asked, but no, I don't think so. My schedule is full
until November. I have two albums and a tour to keep me busy. I
would make movies if I had time. I would love to play villain in a
movie though.
How do you handle personal relationships now you are so busy?
Well socially, they are hard. I wouldn't say I'm lonely, because I
have everyone around me, taking care of me, but like in China, not
many people spoke English so it was hard to maintain relationships
so socially it was hard. And its hard to maintain relationships,
like that last one I had, my phone bill was over AUS$2000 in one
month, so yeah, it was a bit over the top.
Do you work out?
[laughs] Not enough.
Would you ever trash a hotel room, or anything like that?
Oh no! I would sit in a corner feeling guilty of what I had done. I
was a cleaner before so I know how hard it is. I don't see why
people should get special treatment. I get kinda offended but the
world is all about superficiality, y'know?
What are your parents' opinion?
They are amazingly supportive. They weren't too happy when I left
university but they were always there for me.
How many siblings do you have?
Well I have three children of my own. [stunned silence] No, no! I'm
joking! [laughs] I have three brothers, one older, two younger. A
mother and a father (duh), two dogs and a cat. (What about your gold
fish?) My goldfish died. [sniff] You just had to bring that up.
[grins]
Do you surf or..?
I body board. Body boarding is more popular in the South. When I
have free time I think I'll pick it up again.
And there you have it. Be sure to stay logged on to Xfresh.com for
