THE original Australian Idol Guy Sebastian has told how he struggled for respect in the industry after winning the show in 2003.
Sebastian told The Daily Telegraph as Natalie Gauci and Matt Corby compete in Sunday's final that they would have to develop a "thick skin'' and that post Idol can be tough - especially the scrutiny from music industry colleagues.
It's not only record sales and pleasing Sony BMG that the Idols have to worry about.
After he was the highest-selling artist thanks to Idol in 2003, Sebastian was abused and heckled by fellow musicians at the 2004 Aria awards.
"I had some nasty stuff said to me that some of the other bands said to me, disgusting, really,'' he said.
"It was all about that I had sold a lot of records, but where are those bands now?''
Throughout the competition favourite Corby has struggled with dealing with the ``Idol'' tag that is lumped with the show, but Sebastian said he needs to forget it and move on.
He, along with Shannon Noll, are the most successful from the Idol alumni and his has another top 5 album on this hands this week with The Memphis Album.
"You just have to have a positive attitude about the whole thing,'' he said.
"Matt lookes like he is worried about the whole ``Idol'' tag, but he shouldn't be because he is so talented and has the most amazing voice.
"You cannot worry about what people say, they will always judge you.'''
Idol judge Mark Holden compares to what Sebastian and other Idols go through regarding their crediblity to what superstar Kylie Minogue had to put up with at the ARIAs 15 years ago.
``I remember going one year Kylie was nominated and she was booed,'' he said.
``Because of the whole Neighbours thing, she was perceived as having some sort of easy ride.
``But there is no doubt about it this was rubbish, as she had put the hard yards in.''
Holden said Sebastian is a shinning light in the Idol alumni, but also praises Ricki-Lee Coulter and the most talked about failure when it comes to immediated record sales, 2004 winner Casey Donovan.
It's believed Donovan has split with her long time manager Wendy Richards and her business affairs are now looked after by step father Norm Axford.
``I reached out to her family recently, not because I want to become her manager or get involved like that, just because I wanted to listen,'' he said.
``She wasn't comfortable with that.
``But I believe that she is one of the most compelling and fascinating Idols we have ever had.
``She has an incredible story to tell.''
Holden said it is a positive thing that Donovan has hired a trainer in Guy Leech and is trying to get healtlhy.''
``Before you worry about making records, her health is the No.1 issue.''
I REPLIED TO THIS ARTICLE........DO YOU REMEMBER LD?
IT WAS POWDER FINGER AND JET........AND WHO CAN FORGET BLOODY MISSY HIGGENS.........grrrrrrr
Well said Lyn Fairlie of Brisbane.....They knew when they chose her as part of the final 12 she was only just 16.....I felt she was given a raw deal. I wish Casey all the very best for the future....and may she find someone to give her guidance and support. As for Guy Sebastian at the 2004 Aria's....he's being totally honest.....I was there too. Those people were disgusting. I would never buy their music or go to one of their shows EVER! Guy is an absolute gentleman. He is multy talented and a decent human being. He'll be here for the long haul.....unlike those clowns who mocked him.
