Guy(G)’s phone interview with Double D(DD) and the Navster(TN) on RTM’s Radio 4, on 8th July 2004.
DD: Hello Guy
GS: Hey guys TN: So how’s the land down under, man?
GS: The land down under? You know what? I haven’t been there for so long. I been away so long and actually I was …mmm…sorry I’m a bit late to talk to you guys
DD: Nevermind, you know what…
GS: I actually got off the phone to my A&R guy from my record company. He’s telling me that I have to be away even longer
TN: Wait a minute, when was the last time were you in Australia? GS: I was there for few weeks ago and I was there for a little while like a week and prior to that I was away fro 2 months and then I’m gonna be away for another couple of months. So yeah I think spend a couple of weeks in the last 5 months
DD: Oh my goodness wow GS: Now I’m missing friends and missing…
DD: Missing friends and family DD Don’t you wanna bring your mom or dad along with you? GS: (pause) yeah…(laugh)
TN: Haa…(laugh) GS: No…no I really missed them actually…I’m actually close to my parents…even closer to them than a lot of friends
TN: What can I say, that’s the price to pay for fame, man GS: That’s right
DD: Don’t worry, man. Guy, the moment they (Malaysians) found out you’re from Klang, everyone in Malaysia just jump on the bandwagon “hey listen, he’s ours, you guys just take him away from us”
GS: So, we’re taking him back (laugh)
DD: That’s exactly how we’re reacting to this situation now. Guy, let’s put that aside. How’s your record sales coming along, man? GS: Yeah, good. I think mmm we’re about half a million back home and mmm then yeah…I dunno about here I’m not really sure…I’m too busy to find out (laugh). Hang on, hang on…the guys are here (Guy asked the BNG folks behind him “how the record sales going?”). they’re doing good, apparently (laugh)
DD: That’s what they (recording company) do, they’re always saying it’s doing good. TN: So how’s the support, I mean…
GS: It’s sold about 13 now
TN: Hmm…ok that’s good GS: (laugh)…no I’m kidding (laugh)
TN: Ohh 13…(laugh) ok…support wise. In terms of supports, which side is better? The asian side or we’re talking about…
DD: Back home itself…
TN: Which one is better, man? GS: As far as what? TN: The sales wise, the support…
DD: Record sales are concern…
GS: Record sales? Australia is…mmm as far as numbers, I think just coz I mean the show was huge…you know so many people watched it. I think 4 millions people watched the last show and it was a big thing back home and it’s a real phenomena back there so it was real popular and yeah it sold quite a few albums than Kylie Minogue and I was happy about that
DD: Now Guy, we actually manages to tell out listeners if they had any questions to ask you they could send a text message and we got couple of questions to ask you actually…
GS: Sure
DD: Hey Guy. I’m JC from Ampang. We know you’re half Malaysian but no longer Malaysian. Will Guy Sebastian be having a concert here in Malaysia and singing a Malay number? GS: (laugh)
DD: I mean a Malay version on Angels Brought Me Here…oh ok
TN: Haven’t thought about that, man…
GS: Oh maybe you know…I’ll have to learn it properly otherwise I’ll suck at it…
DD: First you gotta…
GS: Otherwise people will go “man that guy thinks he can speak Malay. I dunno what he’s thinking he can speak Tamil or something” (laugh)
DD: No man, you gotta start living in Malaysia and hanging out at all the mamak stalls and making the orders and you’ll be doing just fine, man GS: Aw that’s right. I’ve already been hanging around the mamak stalls too much. I’m full (laugh)
TN: So what are you doing in Malaysia currently? You have a show going on? Or something? GS: Yeah well actually I just did a soundcheck today. I’ve got a show in Hard Rock Café tonight at 11 o’clock and then I’ve got an autograph signing at… I think Saturday I think…mmm…Sunday
TN: Sunday, where about? GS: (asking BMG folks behind him) where is that? DD: Lot 10
GS: Lot 10! Yes, you guys know more than I do (laugh) TN: You better get the security on standby, man…
GS: Yes TN: It’s gonna be a packed place GS: I dunno, man. Probably fun…
DD: You know, Guy…every girl that I met like “oh that guy has an awesome voice but he got to do something about his hair”
GS: I know, man
TN: Hey man, it’s his trademark, man. Leave it to him. Man, you (DD) got a bald head, so he has something like that (the fro) DD: I’ve got no hair at all and he’s got whole lotta hair, which got no direction
GS: I’ll donate some to you…
DD: Alright now Guy TN: Alright, Guy…was about to ask you some time back but kinda forgot. Your album, right, you did a cover of Prince’s When Doves Cry
GS: yeah TN: So why did you use Prince’s track, When Doves Cry? GS: Well I love Prince first of all. Secondly, I did it on the tv show (Australian Idol) and people were really crazy about it they say “aww, you gotta put that on your album”, so I put it on the album
DD: Why didn’t you pick Kiss instead of When Doves Cry GS: (laugh)
DD: (start singing that song, in Prince’s voice) GS: I dunno. It’s a little bit girly for me. I can’t sing that girly
DD: Alright Guy, I gotta ask you this question. Before joining Australian Idol and not knowing you gonna be a superstar (GS: uhuh), did you ever think it’s a mistake where it actually got involves in your personal life and it has taken so much time away from your family and friends and it’s something you never look forward in life, is that so?
GS: Hmm…ah no. I would never regret it. I’ve never go back I mean it’s taken me away for a long time but you know, some people travel abd they do…it’s just the job, it’s such a rewarding job and I got to do what I love and I would never regret it.
TN: Plus the money is good GS: The money is OK, yeah…
TN: You said OK. You got a good album sales and you say ok…
GS: Better than the warehouse I used to work at during university
TN: Ok warehouse…
DD: Talking about university and your studies, are you gonna put it on hold…
TN: Or are you gonna continue? GS: My university? (laugh) No, you know it’s funny people still asks me if I teach or if I still study (laugh) TN: In fact, Boyz II Men did it, they came out with couple of albums, they still continue their studies and some of them are doctors, right now…
GS: Really? TN: Yeah they are GS: You’re kidding me! TN: No I’m not. Boyz II Men. Check out their profiles, man
DD: You’re kidding me, Navster!
GS: Oh man, that’s unreal. I would never find the time to be able to study still no. No I mean maybe but I might but I left university coz I wanted to do music, you know. Yeah (music is) definitely something I wanna pursue. I don’t wanna take any steps backward and I wanna always move forward in my music.
TN: Best of luck in that GS: Yeah so TN: Yeah next question. In your music video, All I Need Is You, what’s up with the bicycle?
DD: What with the bicycle, dude? TN: Is it yours? GS: Well that was before I got a paycheck. (Both DD and TN laugh)…So I have to ride everywhere. I wanted to let the people the taste of how I really am…
DD: Do you really have to ride a bike back in Australia? GS: No I don’t (laugh) DD: Because when we look at it, me and Navster and we were like “ok why is this guy…” TN: What’s up with the bicycle, man? DD: Yeah
TN: We were expecting nice sporty car or…
GS: Well I mean the whole thing is I mean that’s kinda me you know, I’m not a really that sporty car kinda guy I’m not a bling bling sorta dude…mmm…you know I’ve got a car back home and the whole clip it’s kinda almost like a very laidback Mississippi Louisiana kinda feel. Yeah eventhough it was shot in Sydney (laugh)
DD: You know guy I kinda have to be honest with you, when I first heard your track, right, Angels, it’s like ok alright it’s kinda like sad, it’s like really slow and mellow, not my type of music but when I heard your second single, oh man I’m playing it in the clubs!
GS: Oh yeah thanks, man. DD: And it’s got a nice bounce beat to it and people can actually jive to it and can just knock their heads to it, man! GS: Oh man, you wait till second album. I been working on my second album and there’s some bouncing track on them
TN: You got my attention when you perform the world idol, the song What A Wonderful World GS: Oh yes yes TN: That was fantastic, man…that was fantastic GS: Aww, thank you, man…I did that arrangement on the tv show too so they kinda picked Wonderful World for me…I was actually asked to do When Doves Cry in that but Prince wouldn’t clear it…he wouldn’t clar it (laugh) no…I’m kidding

TN: Speaking of which, you were talking about your second album. Is it in working progress rightnow? DD: When can we expect Guy Sebastian returns? GS: Yes, I’m thinking of calling it “Still as I am”. No…that’s a joke. I am…it’s been really cool I mean that’s why I been away for so much. I been in LA, New York and Sweden and Copenhagen, all sorts of places and yeah I just been working with cool people. I got to work with Brian McKnight (DD: you’re kidding me! He’s my idol, man!) and few other people. Yeah he’s great, he’s really cool TN: So what? More bicycles in the new album? GS: (laugh) maybe a sports car in the new one…
DD: Since you’ve actually met Brian McKnight and you’ve been working with him and what not, people say he’s got an attitude. Is that true? GS: (laugh) TN: Be honest with us, man! GS: He’s a very talented guy, he’s been in the game a long time and I guess he just says what he wants to say TN: He does got an attitude then (laugh) DD: Guy Sebastian, you’re a great performer and that’s why you’re on top of the world right now, man GS: Nah…Aww…thank you TN: Guy, in your album, are you gonna have a collaboration with any other artistes? GS: Yeah maybe I’m thinking of…have you ever heard of the Wiggles? DD & TN: The Wiggles? GS: No I’m kidding (laugh) DD: Who are the Wiggles? GS: You don’t know the Wiggles? TN: It’s the cartoon show, right? GS: Yeah, they’re like a children…(Guy just trailed off, then continue) hmm I dunno, man…probably…I dunno, I might ask Brian (McKnight) or I might…I dunno maybe Fantasia or someone…I’m not sure. TN: (after Fantasia’s name being mentioned) Oh man! Perfect timing…talk about perfect timing DD: Oh man. You know what I’ve got a suggestion, why don’t you take each idol in each continent and feature them in your album, do a collaboration with them…
GS: An idol collaboration…maybe (laugh) TN: Maybe you get to sell your album in all different continents, man. GS: Yeah that’s right. I’ll just mmm…I hope Ruben (Studdard, the 2nd season winner of American Idol) doesn’t pick me up or something…
DD: Yeah you must be afraid of him…
GS: He’s a big guy DD: Anyway Guy, it’s a pleasure talking to you, you have a good time down here in Kuala Lumpur…Can you speak malay? GS: No, not really TN: What can you say in malay? Any specific words? GS: “Aku cinta Malaysia” (which mean I love Malaysia) DD: That’s what you do when you get on stage, you get on the mike and say “aku cinta Malaysia”
GS: “Nasi lemak?” (coconut rice – local food, which Guy loves to eat as a child). I know all the food, man…coz you know, we might’ve moved from Malaysia but we still eat all the malay food TN: Do me a favour and tell Dan to get you a nice dictionary, the one that translate from English to malay GS: Ok I will TN: It’s about time he did that GS: I’d definitely will…thank you DD: Alright Guy, you have a great time here in Malaysia and talking about your concert, big huge concert, when can we expect that to happen? GS: My concert? I’m not really sure. I mean I’m touring in Australia, late around this year DD: To be honest with you, you’ve done enough of opening acts already and it’s about time you did something of your own, man! GS: (laugh) TN: Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? GS: Yeah, yeah I can’t wait to get out and actually do a concert I can’t wait ti meet everybody and thank you so much for your support so far and I look forward to giving you some great music TN: Thank you very much, Guy…it was very nice chatting with you DD: You have a nice day, buddy GS: Thank you TN: Hope to see you this coming Sunday, right DD: Sunday at 1.30pm at Lot 10. he’s gonna sign your bottoms or your sleeves or you name it, alright GS: exactly TN: You’re waiting for that aren’t you DD: Most important of all, tonight at 11pm, happening at Hard Rock Café, his showcase! Make sure you catch him live. Guy…
TN: Thank you very much, man DD: Have a nice day, man GS: Same to you DD: Bye.
