anotha Guy article
Guy Sebastian's second album out soonMELBOURNE Aug 5 - Malaysian-born Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian's second album is due to hit record stores in October. "I have got to work with some amazing people (for the second album) and it is just amazing having the public support that I have had," Sebastian is quoted by the Australian Associated Press as saying. Sebastian, formerly of Klang, beat fellow Idol contestant Shannon Noll to the crown last November, securing a recording contract with label BMG Australia. His debut single "Angels Brought Me Here" had one of the fastest-selling first weeks in Australian chart history and the album, "Just As I Am", spent four weeks at the top of the Australian charts. Sebastian has been based in the United States for the past four months, collaborating with some of his favourite artists including his idol, singer/producer Brian McKnight. The first single, "Out With My Baby", will be released on Sept 20, while the album has been slated for an October issue. "It is kind of like a funk 70s retro with a fat modern beat," Sebastian said of the single. "And then is the classic R and B stuff as well and some beautiful ballads." Sebastian, now in Australia for a brief visit, will head back to the US next week before jetting off to Sweden to complete the album. "It has been great formulating where I have wanted to go with the style and just with the sound of the album," he said. Australian Idol judge Mark Holden suggested Sebastian, who is strongly religious, should try a Christian album. "I reckon really soon he needs to make a move into contemporary Christian and look at the world as his market, not just Australia," Holden is reported saying. "The Australian pop business is a fickle, brutal business which generally has diminishing returns." - Bernama

SIGNS OF THE TIMES magazine 06/2004 Issue
It's hard to believe that just a year ago, no=one had heard of GUY SEBASTIAN.. Since his AI win in Nov, 22 year old GUY has been one of the most recognisable faces in Aistralia and the Phenomena has rewritten music industry record books. Guy was last man standing of the 10,000 who auditioned for the Australian version fo the world-wide Idol phenomenon. This series was Australia's second biggest television event in 2003, after the Rugby Union World Cup. More thean 20 million votes were cast to determine the eventual winner, and the final episode attracted an audience of nerarly four Million.
ORDINARY GUY
Guy's distinctive look derives from his mixed heritage. His father is Sri Lankan-Portuguese, whiel his mother is Poruguese/English. Guy himself is Malaysian born. Until fame struck, he was a signing teacher in Adelaide, dropping out of studies in medical raditaion because he wanted to sing. He's worked less-than-glamorous jobs, cleaning in a nursing home and driving forklifts. "I was doing it to affird studio gear and my parents were sweating because I'd left uni and they were wanting the best for me. And so I'm freaking out and trying to make stuff happen by myself. I went through so many years going "what do I do to get where I want to be ?" " And then one day I literally took all those stresses and threw them off. I decided not to worry about it anymore. I gave it all up. A song I've sung regularly sums up what I did. It's called 'I SURRENDER ALL' which is from an old hymn. And basically, from that moment on I knew taht everything that happened was ordered and had purpose for me. And it kind of just started rolling from there. I was offered a teaching job and suddenly 40 students just rolled up. And then I entered Idol."
EXTRAODINARY GUY
That night in November changed Guy's future forever "It totally changed my life," He says " The core stuff is still the same, but every physical part of my life has changed. I've moved from Adelaide to Sydney. That in itsef is such a huge difference - Adelaide is so quite and ti's so different to Sydney. Sydney is pretty full-on and I don't really know many people there. " I miss the little things. I miss playing indoor cricket with friends. I miss going fishing with my brothers. And those little things that you take for granted when you are living a normal life"
But in the frenzy tha's become the life fo GUY SEBASTIAN, his relationships have given him personal foundation. " i think I've just surrounded myself with really good people who've been mentors, like my pators back home who I am in constant communication with. And my friends are all great. " I get so much support and so many great comments in the press about my faith and just about me standing up and not changing - being myself"
BEING GUY
Despite this support network, GUy's instant fame was always going to be a test of his faith and personality. Bu teight months later, he see's an unexpected benifit. "Growing up in chruch I ws so involved," says GUY. "I'd go to church four or five times a week - rehersals, homefellowship and everything else. You become complacent when you arent personally keeping in touch. Then suddenly, I was whipped out of that. These days, going to church is a rarity. SO I've had to maintain my faith for myself - and that's helped me grow."
and that faith has had an influence . I took a firm stance from the start. Lyrically, when I was given (objectional) songs, I wouldn't sign them. Management from BMG were going to kill me. We had two weeks left of the show; we had to have an album done in six days and I'd picked only four songs because they were sending me songs that weren't me, both musically and morally. SO we ended up with an album that I'm proud of, dispite the time it took."
(more still to come)

GUY is concious of his new role-model status. He tells fo an indoor-cricket game after his Idol win in which he lost his temper (shock - no way !!) with an umpire, only to be quickly reminded of his new responsibility by autograph requests from young onlookers and fans. 'Britney Spears can't wake up tomorrow and say, 'I don't want to be a role model' She's in the public eye and whatever she does good or bad it influences kids who look up to her. I can't wake up tomorrow and say 'I don't want to be a role model anymore; it's too much pressure" In light fo his populrity in Australia and growing overseas recognition, the analogy si appropriate " It's just something I've had to cope with and deal tieh - and make the most of" says GUY " I'm never going to be perfect; I'm never going to be better than anybody else, but I can try."
BEYOND IDOL
With a new AI to be announced in a few months, GUY is begining to look to his future in music, what ever that may be. "I've come across so amny people in this industry and it's funny what people base their self-worth on," Guy muses. " They base their self-worth on how many screams they get or how many autographs they sign. Their populrity is everything to them. I know that three years down the track, that might not happen, so that's not what I base my self-worth on."
After perfroming at the Logies in April, GUY headed overseas to work on a new album with some of his musical heros. But his circumspect about his future. "I believe everything has a season, and I know that this season is preparing me for the next season, whether it be sitting in a studio and producing music and writing songs for other people, or whether I'm out in ministry. I really don't kow. But I know that each season has a plan, and it's going to prepare me for the next one. "To tell the truth I didn't always dream of being famous. I always dreamt of being able to sing and make records. I just roll with it, and I'm sure that more dreams than I've had will unfold. And, if not, so be it. " I think true fullfillment lies in being fulfilled in what you are dong, knowing that it has a purpose and knowing that where you are is where you are meant to be."
WOW.......THIS IS A MAN ON A MISSION......
THIS IS JUST A SHORT BIT ABOUT HIS FAITH
Guy is keen to maintain his links with Christian music, particularly the Planetshakers Band with whom he sang before his sudden stellar rise. "i sang on our church album months ago"' he reports " That's pretty much unheard of as far as a signed artist to be able to do that. But when there were contract negotiations, I had negotiatied quite a bit and it went into my contract. It's pretty important to me. I've grown up in church. I've grown up. with an incredible family - great parent, a really good upbringing - strict but good. I think my upbrigning has shapped me as a person and enables me to cope (with the AI experience) I will never say that I got to where I am on my own merits. I definately think that the support and the prayers I received were just incredible for me"
Perhaps his AGMF appearance was a way of saying thank you to his roots. But whatever GUY SEBASTIAN certainly made an impact.
Oh my goodness........I am weeping.......how much can a heart hold.........he is an inspiration.......Bless him.....that's all I can say for the moment......

Search for a new national hero By DANIEL BRETTIG 19aug04
SINGERS Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Darren Hayes and Delta Goodrem are among the leading nominees for the 2005 Australian of the Year Awards.
But organisers say Ian Thorpe's Athens heroics – just days before the nomination deadline – are sure to give him a chance of taking the award.
"I'm pretty sure we're going to get a few more nominations for Ian because of the Olympics," National Australia Day Council director Warren Pearson said.
"He won Young Australian of the Year in 2000 and, interestingly, the only other person to win that award and the Australian of the Year was Cathy Freeman."
Among the singers, Goodrem has enjoyed a flood of support following her high-profile battle with cancer and runaway musical success at home and in Britain
The 19-year-old star is eligible for both Young Australian (for 16 to 25 year olds) and Australian of the Year.
Mr Pearson said the support for Goodrem had been phenomenal and was part of a rise in performing arts nominations.
"It is amazing to see such a vast number of nominations for one person," he said.
"Certainly, the number of nominations for people in the performing arts is higher this year, something we welcome."
Inaugural Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian and runner-up Shannon Noll have also received strong support, capping off a year of healthy album sales and public appearances.
Comparative music veteran Darren Hayes has appeared on the list, nominators citing his past success with Savage Garden and his performance of Lost Without You for Delta Goodrem at the 2004 ARIA Awards.
Other nominees include Glen Sargeant, principal of Plumpton High School in New South Wales, which has a program allowing pregnant students to complete their education, and SA wildlife carer Aaron Machado.
Mr Pearson said he wanted to remind the public that nominees do not have to be celebrities.
"There are many Australians who deserve to be recognised and I encourage everyone to get their nominations in quickly," he said.
Nominations for the awards close on Friday.

THE AFL looks likely to announce that Guy Sebastian will sing the national anthem on Grand Final day.
Sources confirmed to the Herald Sun that the Australian Idol winner has agreed to sing on September 25. Sebastian will sing the anthem and Waltzing Matilda. At last year's Grand Final, he sang with the 11 other Idol finalists.

Goodrem was the first choice in 2003, before she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

There will also be emphasis on producing a more entertaining and visual Brownlow Medal count, to be held at Crown on September 20

19-Aug-04 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2004 BEST NEW AUSTRALIAN ARTIST ON RADIO
Commercial Radio Australia today announced five finalists for the award for Best New Australian Artist on Commercial Radio for 2004, sponsored by Austereo, as part of the Australian Commercial Radio Awards.
They are: Guy Sebastian, Jet, John Butler Trio, Pete Murray and Shannon Noll.
This Award, sponsored by Austereo for the fifth year in a row, is designed to contribute to the development of new artists or groups based in Australia, with the winner receiving $50,000 worth of airtime across Austereo’s 2DAY and Triple M networks to promote current or future releases.
The 2004 finalists all made the Top 50 singles chart for the first time during the judging period (1 July 2003 – 30 June 2004), and remained there for ten weeks or more. The finalist list was developed in consultation with the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) and The Music Network.
The winner is decided by vote from commercial radio program and music directors, using eight criteria including the artists’ potential to succeed, the appeal of the original material performed, their credibility as a performer, willingness to participate in commercial radio promotions, listener requests, willingness to tour Australia, chart position obtained and CD sales.
Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner said the award is an example of commercial radio stations’, and Austereo in relation to this award, commitment to providing a development platform for new music talent in Australia.
“It's been a phenomenal year for new Australian talent - it’s going to be very tough to pick one winner as all the finalists have had a huge debut,” Ms Warner said.
“As part of the radio industry’s commitment to fostering new Australian talent, we are also holding the third New Music to Radio Showcase (NM2R) at the Gold Coast on October 15 which features up to seven new Australian artists who perform in front of the radio industry for the first time.”<br> The 2004 Australian Commercial Radio Awards are organised by Commercial Radio Australia, on behalf of the industry. The Awards include 28 categories, which cover all areas of radio broadcasting including news, talk, comedy, sport and music across metropolitan, provincial and country radio stations in most categories. Winners of the 2004 Awards, the 16th annual event, will be announced at a gala ceremony to be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on October 16. Master of ceremonies (MC) for the night is renowned Austereo radio personality, Kyle Sandilands.
The 2004 ACRAs will once again enjoy the support of Arbitron, Nielsen Media Research, Australian Retirement Fund, RCS Sound Software, Comsyst and The Music Network.
GOOD LUCK GUY
