Amazing start in Perth.
ALMOST a decade after winning the first season of Australian Idol, Guy Sebastian hasn’t run out of reasons to celebrate.
Straight off the back of reaching gold status in the US with his single Battle Scars featuring Lupe Fiasco, the singer opened his Get Along Tour with the first of two sold-out shows at Crown Theatre Perth last night.
Kicking off with Amnesia and Beg, the first two tracks from his latest album Armageddon, Sebastian, who has had more number one singles than any other Australian male artist in Aussie music history, set the bar for the evening impossibly high with his powerful vocals.
And though he admitted to feeling nervous about the first show of the tour, the singer’s voice was unwavering during songs such as Attention, Don’t Worry Be Happy and Keeper.
Sta
“You can tell it’s the first show because I’m looking at notes,” he laughed.
Former X-Factor contestant Angel Tupai stepped up to help Sebastian sing the title track of Armageddon before he and she launched into Died and Gone to Heaven and Sebastian stole the stage on piano for Get Along.
Then, Carmen Smith, who was unceremoniously axed from The Voice last year after the show’s producers ruled she had breached the spirit of the competition and obtained an unfair advantage by appearing in the film clip for Gold with Sebastian, performed a powerful duet with him for Art of Love.
Sebastian took a couple of time-outs throughout the show to give thanks to the crowd, including both long-time fans and newcomers, for his phenomenal career.
“I really don’t take this for granted,” he said.
“And I know this is corny but I have to thank you guys.”
Sebastian and his band also performed stripped back versions of Bring Yourself, Sweetest Berry and Big Bad World, a song written about his one-year-old son, Hudson, whose pictures played across the screens behind them.
It’s always endearing to see success hasn’t changed someone and Sebastian was humble, funny and laid-back as he chatted and joked away between songs.
“I’m going to take all this off because I’m not Mr T,” he said removing his jewellery to better play the guitar.
The concert also featured the first performance of his new song Alive, Oh Oh, which set the scene for an audience dance-off, as well as Who’s That Girl and Angels Brought Me Here.
The encore included Battle Scars and new song Bed of Clouds featuring Canadian rapper Swift K.I.D, who had flown in from Montreal for the tour, and Like It Like That brought the audience to its feet.
Sebastian’s opening act, US singer-songwriter David Ryan Harris, who also performed in his band for the evening, deserves a mention.
Harris, who has co-written songs with Sebastian including Battle Scars and Like It Like That, performed a short acoustic set featuring his songs including Pretty Girl, Shelter, Still Be Loving You and Turn Around.
Sebastian will perfrom a second sold-out show at Crown Theatre Perth before opening in Melbourne.

JOHN Farnham has been voted Australia's best singer of all time - by a panel of over 100 Australian singers and musicians.
The result sees Farnham, 63, confirm his status as the singers' singer among his peers.
"Yes he is The Voice and that frickin' TV show full of wannabes ought to find a new name and restore his title," Ross Wilson said.
Singers singled out Farnham for his consistent and effortless range, tone and power in a career that has stretched for decades.
Farnham edged out late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott who was regularly chosen as the best rock singer in Australian history.
"Nobody has done it better since," country star Lee Kernahan noted, with Scott praised for the wit and cheek injected into his voice.
Tina Arena's lengthy reign as one of most acclaimed singers continued by placing at no.3 in the poll. "Technically, she is faultless," observed Anthony Callea.
The Top 10 also contained a few surprises. While the ARIA Awards have been slow to recognise the talents of Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian, his peers have praised his vocals.
"The guy is a Memphis soul singer in a pop star's body," said Melbourne singer Michael Paynter.
Adelaide's Sia Furler is one of four women in the Top 10, while INXS singer Michael Hutchence joins Bon Scott as another posthumous inclusion in the Top 10.
"Michael was a sassy rock singer who just oozed sex and style," said Daryl Braithwaite.

While I personally would disagree with a lot of the listing, I personally would definitely include Guy in the top 10. His voice is getting richer, more resonance (if that's possible) and powerful than ever before. I'm hoping that he's writing with David Ryan Harris as they tour around. I'm sure he would be
