Carmen Smith Update: Guy Sebastian Slams Nine over ‘The Voice’ Decision
By Arlene Paredes | May 18, 2012 05:04 PM EDT
Top 24 finalist Carmen Smith has been kicked out of The Voice before the finals for her part on Guy Sebastian's new single, “Gold.” Sebastian has since expressed his disappointment over the show's decision.
Here are the details surrounding Smith’s sudden exit and the reactions of the people involved in the Aussie television controversy:
- Smith, who belongs to Team Joel Madden, appeared in Guy Sebastian’s new music video for the single “Gold” under Sony label.
- Channel Nine said Smith’s role in Sebastian’s recording gives her an unfair advantage over the other contestants.
- According to Nine, Smith has breached the "spirit of the show" by appearing in the video.
- Sebastian slammed Nine’s decision, saying, The Voice was made aware about Smith’s part in his recording.
- Sebastian said Smith had been his backup singer for about nine years and recorded on most of his albums.
- Smith had aired her sentiments about the disqualification by saying, “It saddens me that I am leaving The Voice earlier, much earlier, than I had hoped.”
- Nine's spokesman Adrian Swift had responded to criticisms against the show’s decision, saying, "This was not a decision we and Team Joel took lightly. Our priority as we move into the voting period toward the finale is that all of the artists are on a level playing field."
- Critics are raising the point that Guy Sebastian's brother Chris, Jimmy Barnes' daughter Mahalia and Delta Goodrem's own backing singer Glenn Cunningham are all professional singers like Smith, but no one is telling them they have breached the “spirit of the show.”
- Aussie media begin to suspect a “conspiracy,” because Smith had recorded with Sebastian under Universal’s competition, Sony.
- Part of the winnings of The Voice winner is a record contract with Universal.
- However, The Voice coach Delta Goodrem is also with Sony, so the conspiracy theory is not solid.
On Twitter, Smith shouted out her gratitude to everyone who had her back when the going got rough. She said this recent development in her career will not stop her, anyway.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support and kind words. I'm going to get on with doing what I do best, singing and performing,” Smith tweets.
Did The Voice make a proper decision on Smith?
people seem to not be aware that Mahalia, Prinnie and the other guy BV have been gigging big time together at the Gov. (they should be alllowed to, it is after all their job)
Prinnie had a single last year, called "Lion" fab. video
she has had several US contracts which unfortunately have fallen through, much as Guy's before, due to different branches of the big boys such as Sony being disolved. Chris Mann from the USA The Voice was one such person caught out, at exactly the same time as Guy's first one.
MOST of the competitors are entirely professional, and not only were known to be that but actually headhunted. I guess The Voice wanted to put as good a spin on the first a series as possible.

HINT Australia's Got Talent may be featuring Guy Sebastian and Gold - with a dearly loved BV next Wednesday !!!
