Million dollar jackpot for Idol stars
AUSTRALIAN Idol winner Guy Sebastian has been given a cheque for more than $1 million by his record label BMG.
The singer, who returns to Australia tomorrow after a south-east Asian tour, was handed the seven-figure cheque in April. The money is just a portion of Sebastian's income for the October to December quarter of 2003.
Idol runner-up Shannon Noll, who plans to audition for a role in Channel Nine's McLeod's Daughters, is next in line. He will receive his million dollar payday from BMG later this year.
Sebastian has sold 500,000 copies of his debut album, Just As I Am, in Australia. He earns approximately $2.60 for every $30 album sold. He also receives royalties for single sales and songwriting.
Sebastian's and Noll's manager, David Caplice, refused to comment on the $1 million cheques, but said: "With Idol, the acts can potentially do really well. The deal is well structured, and it's all good."
Noll has sold 350,000 copies of his debut album, That's What I'm Talking About, representing an income of $910,000. He also receives royalties for single sales and songwriting, plus earnings from his recent club tour.
Former pop star Garry Frost, the man behind Noll's debut single, What About Me? has also hit the jackpot.
The ballad, written more than 20 years ago, was based around Frost's experience taking an autistic child to a shop in Annandale.
It was a No.1 hit for Frost's band, Moving Pictures, in the early-1980s. Noll's version has sold 280,000 copies.
"I don't think I owe Shannon a beer or 10," Frost said. "I owe him a brewery."
The rights to What About Me? were once owned by John Farnham's manager, Glenn Wheatley. He sold them to publishing company Warner/Chappell. Frost is keen to buy the rights to the song.
